The islands of Sydney Harbour have a part in the industrial and engineering development of the city.

In two ferry trips, one to the east from Circular Quay and the other to the west, you can view most of the islands from the harbour and appreciate some of
their history.

Self-guided cycle tour

The tour is about 23 km. It starts at Settlers Park, Ryde, near the railway bridge crossing the Parramatta River, and ends at Kendrick Park, Tempe, near Tempe Station and the Princes Highway. The route is mostly off-road with easy riding conditions.

This is a guide to short tours of some of Sydney’s colonial fortifications. Although they were built to counter the threat of foreign raiding parties, none ever fired a shot in anger.

Before Federation in 1901, the construction and maintenance of Australian defence installations and associated works were the responsibility of each colony.
Sydney Harbour Bridge

Self-guided walk

The bridge walk is about 1.5 km. It starts at Milsons Point Railway Station, a short distance from the north end of the bridge, and ends at the stairs leading down to Cumberland Street in the city, a short distance from Circular Quay and Wynyard

There are stairs leading to the footway at each end of the bridge, with no wheelchair access. Allow two hours for the walk.

The deep waters of Sydney Harbour enabled goods to be loaded and unloaded to overseas or coastal shipping at many points around the shoreline. Many industries took advantage of this potential, and established factories or production facilities right on the Harbour foreshores.

These establishments are fast disappearing to make way for modern development, but their stories can still be told.

In this one to two hour tour of the fine collection of engines at the Sydney Powerhouse Museum, you can trace the history of the steam engine and the
contributions it made to the development of New South Wales.

Learn about the Ultimo Power House, built just over 100 years ago, the first large electric power station in Australia, whose buildings now house the museum.
Parramatta River bridges

This self-guided tour describes how you can explore the many crossings (bridge, tunnel and ferry) across Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River as you travel by RiverCat from Circular Quay to Parramatta or reverse.

The journey from Sydney to Parramatta takes a little over an hour.
Sydney Water: A day tour of the water supply dams south of Sydney

Self-guided tour by car

In this whole-day tour by car you will see the major dams, canals and pipelines that provide water to Sydney. Some of these works still in use were built around 1880. The round trip tour from Sydney is around 350 km, all on good roads and motorway.

The tour is through attractive countryside south of Sydney, and there are good picnic areas and playgrounds at the dam sites.
